These photographs of “CHIRINGAS” were taken by my friend and former student Osvaldo Delbrey using his Canon A-1 with Portra 400 film. They were taken on June 15, 2019 and document the kite-building workshop, the procession from Ballajá to the grounds of El Morro, the reading of the obituary, and the kite-flying performance. “CHIRINGAS” was a workshop and place-based event, a memorial for all the queer spaces that have closed in Old San Juan. More information on the event can be found here.
The event was produced and organized by myself alongside Kleanthis Kyriakou, and supported by the State Historic Preservation Office and the University of Puerto Rico - Río Piedras.
