Cüirtopia is a queer/cüir Caribbean project on buildings and territories. It is my newest research project, funded by the FIPI Grant from 2020-2022. The project seeks to create a web-based, interactive map—“Cüirtopia”—acting as the first architectural and urban register of LGBTQ+ spaces in Puerto Rico from the 1960s until today. By recognizing spaces of queerness within contemporary cartographic practices, “Cüirtopia” inserts the buildings and spaces that are significant to the LGBTQ+ community into the island’s architectural history, cultural infrastructure, urban memory, and political future. The map is both: an archival artifact and a speculative research method, testing innovative approaches between urban field research and socially oriented GIS technologies. Apart from mapping spaces and places, “Cüirtopia” presents and allows user-generated submissions of various sets of spatial information depending on the place. “Cüirtopia” lives across different mediums—a radio show, drawings, Instagram, films, and events—and will culminate in June 2022 with the launch of its map. Its story can be found here in real-time.

They say that islands are the perfect place for utopia and for paradise on earth. For example, centuries ago, the Garden of Eden was drawn up on maps as an unreachable island, in humankind’s quest to locate its sacred origins.

I’m less interested in pinpointing Eden on a map of the world, than I am in another place.

I’ve heard stories of a small group of islands where some men who love women love men, and where women love women, and men love women who love men who love men, because its inhabitants are neither male nor female, and both at the same time.

As extraordinary as Eden sounds, with its infinite springs and its closeness to God the Father, in this archipelago I’ve heard about, God is Mother. They say that here, God doesn’t walk around the garden, God is the garden: its stones, its rivers, its hurricanes, its forests. And everything in between.

Supposedly, in Eden, snakes talk. But in this far-away-island, glamorous people in stilettos fly through the air and land on their feet like cats, and bears congregate in a tavern near the beach.

I’ve heard the island boasts an infamous circus, that although has no lions, has its fair share of clowns and freaky freaks.

Rumors of this little-known-island tell the tales of a pitch black room, where bodies glowing in purple light used to gyrate and grind into the night.

I’ve been told of a discrete hole in the wall, where a blinking, red, neon “BOYS” “BOYS” “BOYS” sign led you down to secret rooms that reek of S-E-X.

I’ve heard stories about this building whose dance floor, filled to the very top with foam, hid all sorts of mischief.

And stories of a secret pool located on the second floor of a building in an ancient fortified citadel.

I call the setting of these stories, this remote island: Cüirtopia.

In Cüirtopia, truth is stranger than fiction. This should come as no surprise: islands are rich in myth and magic. But although, for some, paradise is an island, it can be hell too. For all their wander, islands are also the stage for chaos and disaster.

Like Judith Schalansky writes, “In these spaces, terrible illnesses can break out unhindered, and strange customs can hold sway… Crimes such as rape, murder and cannibalism seem almost inevitable in these circumstances of such insularity.”

I’ll be the first to admit, that if Cüirtopia does exist, it would certainly be full of geographical contradictions: some say that Babylon was located in the heart of its capital city, though it’s nowhere near Mesopotamia.

Others say that it was the home to a North Pole, despite it being supposedly located some 18 degrees north of the equator.

Reaching Cüirtopia will be a months-long journey, perhaps even taking years. We certainly won’t get there tomorrow, but I invite you to follow me on this journey. Without your voices, without your stories, without your likes, comments, and shares, there is no Cüirtopia

Cüirtopia lives in our skin, in our memories, and in our networks. It’s urgent that we tell these stories for the generations we have today, and for the ones that will come after us. And we’ll begin today, here, unveiling the visual identity of this project through its wordmark.

Vibrantly Caribbean, Cüirtopia’s identity is composed of lines moving across the screen, fragmented, they draw up the word itself, inflating it three-dimensionally. Lines that are broken apart, fleeting, and fragmented, suggest the name Cüirtopia.

In a similar way, the stories we tell will be limited and fragmented, and I see this as the power of the project, not as its limitation. Cüirtopia won’t be the setting for a traditional history of queer spaces, but rather a queer mode of constructing our history. It will resist linearity, objectivity, and chronology. In Cüirtopia’s gaps we’ll find spaces of protection. But in its stories we’ll ensure a queer legacy.
